Warning about spray foam insulation

Parishioners should be made aware that there have been some reports on Radio 4 of ‘cowboys’ selling spray foam insulation designed to be sprayed directly onto the underside of the roof, claiming to access difficult to reach eaves sections. Householders have had damage caused by the technique and considerable costs to then remove the foam, which sets like concrete, in order to be able to sell their property.

Householders should avoid this method in any approaches made to them and seek professional or trustworthy advice. The cheapest and safest insulation mats for your loft are products such as mineral wool rolls or sustainable products like sheep’s wool, recycled paper or hemp/jute batts all tested for fire safety. It is also better to use breathable products so as to avoid any moisture causing rot to rafters. Currently spray foam is not banned in Building Regulations but evidence shows this is a problematic technique.

Switch energy provider

This is one of the easiest things you can do to save you money on your bills.

Get a smart meter

A smart meter will give you near to real-time information on your energy consumption to help you manage your energy use and save money, as well as reduce your carbon footprint. It also means your billing will be more accurate as information will be sent direct to your energy provider. Smart meters can be installed for free.

Join an energy switching scheme

Energy switching schemes join groups of people together. Energy companies then bid for the right to supply those individuals to supply their gas and electricity. Because it is one bulk contract, members of the scheme benefit from a lower price. Auctions take place three times a year.

Advice on keeping warm this winter

Warm Home Discount Scheme

You could get £140 off your electricity bill for winter 2020 to 2021 under the Warm Home Discount Scheme. The scheme is open for applications from 12 October 2020.

You do not receive any money. Instead you will get a one-off discount on your electricity bill between September and March.

You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity.

You may have to contact your energy supplier to find out if they offer this discount and to apply. Not all energy suppliers are part of the scheme.
